Green Desk, the short-term office space company now run by Jack Guttman, is growing like weeds. The company started out at 155 Water Street in 2008 and then expanded to 68 Jay Street last year. And as we reported recently, the company is in the process of converting the former Prague Kolektiv space at 143 Front Street into a retail concept called Shops@GreenDesk. That’s not all, it turns out: A new office location is currently being renovated at 149 Prince Street, just off Flatbush behind The Toren. It’ll be interesting to see if this new location flies. It’s clearly not as desirable for the creative set as Dumbo. GMAP
I’m happy to see that building being re-used. That site was supposed to be combined with the eastern leg of Prince Street and the southern leg of Fair Street (now demapped) into a larger development parcel. But the City couldn’t follow through on their own plans and make a deal with the Gutmans, so the streets remain temporarily open (even though they are demapped) and the existing buildings remain.
Presumably one day, perhaps at the next economic cycle, that building will get built.
Good for the Gutmans for taking the moment and going ahead with the project. There is a huge shortage of this type of space in Downtown Brooklyn. The enormous floor plates and leasing methods in Metrotech are outdated for the kinds of uses that Downtown Brooklyn needs – I’m sure they will do will there, even if the surroundings aren’t the most beautiful. It’s convenient enough.
Glad all the scaffolding has come down too. However, that wide expanse of concrete between Prince and Myrtle would have looked a lot better had some trees been planted along Flatbush Ave. Extended. That corridor can use some sprucing up.
Haha…I walked my dog by this building the other morning and walked into a dude zipping his pants up. He looked all nervous…I think he was getting a blowjob before work.
Speaking of Toren, now that the scaffolding has come down, I think the base of the building looks really great.
I hope you’ll do a follow up on the building soon, as I think it looks like a terrific addition to the Flatbush Avenue corridor.

yeah, i do actually hate the term “creative professionals” as most of the ones ive met are seriously some of the most uncreative people ever!

Rob, the “creative set” is code for “creative professionals” which is code for $175,000/yr. It’s not about price, it’s about what’s cool. 🙂
