Get immersed in 19th century atmosphere with a performance of playwright Christina Anderson’s ‘pen/man/ship’ as part of a new dinner theater series at Weeksville Heritage Center.
The three-part ‘Architect of Pride’ series features theater events paired with thematically appropriate meals. The series is part of a collaboration with the New Black Fest which seeks to create change and opportunity in black theater through advocacy and the showcasing of works from diverse perspectives and experiences.

The action of Anderson’s ‘pen/man/ship’ takes place in 1896 on board a ship sailing to Africa with a tense group of passengers and crew dealing with family dramas and a route detour. The maritime theme will be carried over into the dinner pairing for the evening.
Chef Jeneé Grannum will be preparing a meal that reflects the reality of the ingredients that would have been available at sea. Fresh fruits and vegetables, milks and eggs would all have been scarce onboard. The meal will feature a modern spin on a 19th century hearty stew (with a vegan option) as well as tasty saltwater taffy and molasses pull treats for dessert.
The performance will take place at Weeksville Heritage Center at 158 Buffalo Avenue in Crown Heights on Tuesday, April 10 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets for the full evening are $25 but there are also $10 tickets for the performance only. This is the second event in the three-part series. To find out more about the series or to purchase tickets, click here.
