The Front Room is pleased to introduce Stephen Mallon’s large-scale photography of the crash of flight 1549. Never before has a commercial aircraft crashed in the Hudson with the complete survival of all passengers and crew. Mallon’s photography of the disaster shows the unbeatable odds that the pilot and crew overcame. The reception is on Saturday, but the gallery is open on Friday – Sunday 1 p.m. – 6 p.m. until October 11. Saturday, September 12. 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. 147 Roebling Street, The Front Room.

Brooklyn Book Festival
Are you crazy about books and readings? This festival is for you. Besides panel discussions and readings, there will be young adult and children’s programming and a literary marketplace in Brooklyn Borough Hall Plaza. There will be a lot to check out and to get a good idea of all that is going on you can also check out mcbrooklyn. Come and enjoy. Brooklyn Flea
The Brooklyn Flea takes place in Ft. Greene on Saturday and its historic Brooklyn Bridge location on Sunday. Both locations feature a great mix of vintage, antiques, jewelry, and food. Saturday, September 12. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, Lafayette Avenue between Clermont and Vanderbilt Avenues. Sunday, September 13. 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. In Dumbo, underneath the Brooklyn Bridge at the corner of Water and New Dock Street.

Fun & Film at Cooper Park
There will be crafts and music for kids of all ages, followed by the film Howl’s Moving Castle on the lawn when it gets dark. The film, Howl’s Moving Castle, is by the Japanese animator, Hayao Miyazaki,and is recommended for people of all ages. In case of rain, the date of this event will be September 19. 6th Annual Stoop Sale
Are you heading to the Brooklyn Flea this weekend? Of course you are! In addition to the Brooklyn Flea is the Carlton-Willoughby Block Association and it will be hosting it’s 6th Annual Stoop Sale. The sale is located only two blocks from the flea. There will be a stretch of three blocks of Carlton Avenue – between Lafayette and Myrtle Avenues – containing all types of goodies for the home. Free Smokey Robinson Performance
As part of the Recovery Rally, sponsored by A&E, Smokey Robinson will be playing for free to raise awareness that addiction is a treatable disease and recovery is possible. This will be the 20th anniversary of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. There will be a walk before the performance and it meets in Manhattan’s Foley Square and ends up at Cadman Plaza, Brooklyn. Smokey’s performance starts at noon. Saturday, September 12. 8:30 a.m. for the walk. 12 p.m. for the performance. Foley Square, NYC and Cadman Plaza, Brooklyn.

Parachute: the Coney Island Performance Festival

This is the first annual literary and performance festival in Coney Island and it is a community based festival focusing on Brooklyn artists. Highlights include poet, Patricia Spears Jones, John Ventimiglia from the Sopranos reading Henry Miller’s words on Coney Island, Eileen Myles (named by BUST magazine as “the rock star of modern poetry) and the former Brooklyn Poet Laureate, Dennis Nurkse. Come and enjoy. Saturday and Sunday, September 12 and 13. 6:30 p.m. (both days). Surf Avenue at West 8th Street, New York Aquarium’s Alien Stingers exhibit.

Red Hook Jazz Festival
As part of the InGardens citywide outdoor music festival, RUMCA (Rise Up Creative Music and Arts) presents the Red Hook Jazz Festival. Several jazz musicians will be playing for Brooklynites on Sunday and in this order: Nick Gianni’s Evolution, Underground Horns, Hungry March Band, Ras & Matt, and the Paul Koget Quartet. All are welcome to enjoy. Sunday, September 13. 1:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. The end of President Street on the corner of Van Brunt Street, The Urban Meadow.

    Meet+Greet Dutch Flat Bottom Fleet in Atlantic Basin Red Hook. Sunday 9/13/2009 5-7pm

    These fragile, historic vessels, many over 100 years old, have been shipped across the Atlantic on a freighter for the Hudson Quadricentennial.

    See the fleet enter Atlantic Basin, dock and raise their ceremonial flags. Crew will disembark and be greeted by NYC EDC President Seth Pinsky and invited electeds and community leaders and groups. After welcoming remarks, light eats will be served. Event sponsored by NYC EDC and PortSide NewYork.

    Where: South end of Pier 11, Atlantic Basin, Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. Enter by bike+foot at Pioneer+Conover Street, by car at Bowne+ mlay Streets.
