A Year at Eagle Street Rooftop Farm: Putting the Green Back in Greenpoint
The Commons Brooklyn hosts a one-night exhibition of Brooklyn photographer Scott Nyerges’ A Year At Eagle Street Rooftop Farm. The show represents the culmination of Scott’s year-long photo-documentary project and celebrates the farm year at Eagle Street Rooftop Farm. At 8 p.m., guests are welcome to bid in an auction held by Rooftop Farm to benefit Evolutionary Organics and Canuco Farm, whose barn burned earlier this year. Friday, December 10. 6 p.m. – 12 a.m. 388 Atlantic Avenue, The Commons.
Candlelight Kids Tour
On Friday, we invite everyone to tour the Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum via candlelight and learn what life was like when after the sun set, and the night began its sleepy lullaby. Together everyone will view the 17th, 18th, and 19th century rooms, read early American documents by the flickering glow of candles, lanterns, and lamps, and discover the meaning of the term sleep tight at New York City’s oldest structure! This event is not recommended for young children. Please call 718.629.5400 to make a reservation. Space is limited. Friday, December 10. 4:30 p.m. $5/$7. Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum.
The Brooklyn Flea
The winter Flea is located at Skylight One Hanson (the former Williamsburgh Savings Bank across from the Atlantic Center mall) on Saturdays and Sundays. The Flea features over a 100 vendors offering a great mix of vintage, antiques, jewelry, and food. Saturday & Sunday, December 11 & 12. 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Free. One Hanson Place/Williamsburg Savings Bank.

Bethlehem or Bust
Everyone knows about the Three Kings and their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, but not so many people know about the adventures they had on their way to the manger. Bethlehem or Bust, Piper McKenzie’s first-ever family show, envisions the Wise Men as swashbucklers on an action-packed journey where they need to brave all sorts of robbers, monsters, Roman soldiers and the occasional shepherd on their way to meet one of history’s most famous babies. (Great for kids age 7 and up!) Saturday & Sunday, December 11 & 12. 2 p.m. $15. 575 Metropolitan Avenue, The Brick.
Annual Art Benefit for Doctors Without Borders
Each year, this event is organized with other Brooklyn artists and writers to raise funds for the wonderful work of Doctors Without Borders. This organization continues to provide emergency medical care to the people of Haiti and the refugees in Darfur and Chad. Please come and support. Saturday, December 11. 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Free. 55 Prospect Park West, Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture.
The SOB’s: Herrmann, Takemitsu, Penderecki, and Bunch
The Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki’s deeply moving Chaconne was written in 2005 to mark the passing of his fellow countrymen Pope John Paul II. Kenji Bunch’s Nocturne was written in 1995, but recalls the sound world of the earliest twentieth century, with a richly layered string sound reminiscent of Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht or the film scores of Bernard Herrmann, whose music is represented on our concert by perhaps his most well known piece, the music for Hitchcock’s groundbreaking psychological thriller Psycho. The concert will be followed by a free reception that will give you a chance to mingle with the musicians with a glass of wine and homemade foodstuffs. Saturday, December 11. 8 p.m. $10. 157 Montague Street, St. Ann + the Holy Trinity Church.
The 11th Annual Tree Lighting Celebration
Join in the spirit of holiday and community as we light the tree in Fulton Park and carol over to St. Philip’s Church (265 Decatur St) for warm refreshments, gift-giving and a visit from Santa and Ms. Claus. Stay in the spirit and continue celebrating with SoLA and their 12 Days of Christmas. Each merchant is hosting a wonderful event and/or special promotion from December 11th through December 23rd. Friday, December 10. 7 p.m. Free. Fulton Park, Brooklyn.
Fiction vs. Memoir
What is the best way to get at the truth? Join best selling authors Myla Goldberg and Darin Strauss as they discuss their new books, one of which looks back on the past through the lens of fiction, the other through the lens of memoir. All proceeds go to The Brooklyn New School (P.S. 146). Sunday, December 12. 6 p.m. $12 – $25 Donation at the door. 702 Union Street, Union Hall.
I encourage you to check out Wyckoff Farm Museum, despite its out-there location; it is amazing and by candlelight should be awesome. But take them at their word and do NOT bring tots under 5; it is not Disney-like. The tiny rooms are atmospheric and rather fragile, better for older kids. Look for the corncobs in the wall–insulation from almost 4 centuries ago. The place is just unimaginably old.
