Northern Exposure More Tales of Green-Wood
The monuments and mausoleums of Green-Wood have many fascinating stories to tell and some of the most interesting are not about the most famous. Visit, with tour leader Ruth Edebohls, the final resting places and hear the stories of the Father of Baseball, a pioneering embalmer, the scandalous wife of an equally-scandalous Civil War general, the best woman who ever lived, Charles Ebbets, Johnny Torrio (Al Capone’s role model), Elmer Sperry, Juan Trippe (the founder of Pan Am who was portrayed by Alec Baldwin in the film The Aviator), James Gordon Bennett, Townsend Harris, F.A.O. Schwarz and many more. Sunday, November 14. 1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. $15. Meet at the Gothic Arch inside the entrance at 25th Street and Fifth Avenue.

Project LeafDrop 2010
Composting is beneficial both as a money-saving source of nutrient-rich fertilizer for gardeners, as well as a huge tool for waste reduction, channeling unnecessary waste away from the landfill. The new Church Avenue Communal Garden, a project of the Urban Gardens and Farms Initiative, will hold leaf collections so that you can bring your fall leaves and be part of the movement for less garbage and more gardens! Saturday, November 13. 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Free. Corner of East 21st Street and Kenmore Terrace (1 block south of Church Avenue), Church Avenue Communal Garden.

Renaissance in Newtown Creek
The environment of Newtown Creek suffered from merciless abuse and neglect for more than a century, but recent years have brought improvements. On the Brooklyn side, participants will view the striking New York City Department of Environmental Protection Wastewater Treatment Plant and walk along its adjacent George Trakas designed Nature Trail. Then everyone will cross the Pulaski Bridge to Long Island City, ending at a nexus of contemporary artists’ studios and exhibition spaces. Leader: Jack Eichenbaum, urban geographer. To make reservations, visit http://mas.org/calendar or call (212) 935-2075. Saturday, November 13. 11 a.m. $10 – $15. Pay at the tour. Meet at the N.E. corner of Greenpoint & Manhattan avenues (McDonalds).

Fab Fridays on Fulton
Every second Friday of the month, select Fulton Street businesses will open their doors for exciting, one-of-a-kind in-store events designed with the Brooklyn community in mind. As customers stroll the street, they can relish in a festive party atmosphere while taking in the unparalleled talents of neighborhood music and visual artists. Friday, November 12. BETA Spaces
BETA Spaces is a uniquely conceptual and collaboratively driven arts festival. Arts in Bushwick invites artists and curators to register thematic, multi-disciplinary, group exhibitions in both traditional and alternative venues. The constraints of the festival, both geographic and conceptual, allow many first-time curators to create projects within a supportive environment. Ultimately, the parameters of BETA Spaces provide a common ground and the festival functions as a ‘group show’ of creative pursuits. Sunday, November 14. 11 a.m. – 12 a.m. Free.
