2nd Annual Brooklyn Folk Festival
The 2nd annual Brooklyn Folk festival is coming to our neighborhood this weekend! The festival, which is organized by Down Home Radio, will feature the best in old-time music, blues, pre-blues, jug band music, New Orleans jazz, folk style songwriting, Greek, African and Mexican folk music and dance with concerts, workshops, and a Sunday afternoon square dance. Friday – Sunday, May 21 – 23. Times vary. $40 for all three days. $15 per day. $5 for afternoons only. 315 Columbia Street, The Jalopy Theater.
6th Annual Bicycle Fetish Day
A block party for your bicycle! There will be Bike Contests, an Alley-Cat Race, Bicycle Advocacy Info Tables, BMX Trix, local artists, Vintage Bikes, a BBQ, LIVE Music, Souvenirs, and more! There wills also be an after party which will take place at the City Reliquary’s Urban Greenspace (aka backyard!), with Brooklyn Brewery Beers by donation and musical guests Apocalypse Five and Dime and dance tunes spun by DJ Tinseltown. Bike enthusiasts rejoice!!! Saturday, May 22. 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. After party at City Reliquary (370 Metropolitan Avenue) at 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. Free. Havemeyer Street between Grand and Hope Streets.
The Brooklyn Flea
The Flea is located not only at the former bank at One Hanson, but also at the Fort Greene market. On Saturdays, the market will be located at the Fort Greene location and on Sundays you can find the market at One Hanson which is located at the clocktower Art Deco building at Flatbush Ave., across from the Target mall. The Flea features 100 vendors and a great mix of vintage, antiques, jewelry, and food. Saturday & Sunday, May 22 & 23. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Free. 176 Lafayette Avenue and 1 Hanson Place, Skylight One Hanson.

3rd Ward’s Annual Birthday BBQ
3rd Ward turns 4 this May. To celebrate, they’re flooding their space, inside and out, with live music, BBQ, summer drinks, art, crafts, screen-printing (bring your own tees!), free workshops and synchronized biking! Saturday Night by Moonlight, Flashlight & Footlights
Bring a flashlight and you’re all set. This special nighttime walk, led by Cemetery historian Jeff Richman, features live accordion music, a visit inside Green-Wood’s Catacombs and the light (weather permitting) of the moon. The finale is New York, New York, written by Green-Wood permanent resident Fred Ebb and played by accordionists on Battle Hill, with the Manhattan skyline in the distance. No reservations necessary. Saturday, May 22. 8:15 p.m. $20. Meeting place located inside the main entrance at 25th Street and 5th Avenue, Green-Wood Cemetery.
Seining: The River Wild
Join us as we use a 30-foot seining net to catch fish and other remarkable East River creatures. Families and kids can take a good look at the fish before we release them back to their homes and keep a tally of our catch. All ages, all children must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear shoes or sandals suitable for walking on a rocky beach, and that you don’t mind getting wet. Saturday, May 22. 9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. Free. Main Street, the beach under the Manhattan Bridge in DUMBO.
Poetic Tours of Fort Greene Park: Walt Whitman’s Park
The Conservancy, in partnership with The Walt Whitman Project, will present the second of four Poetic Tours of Fort Greene Park: Walt Whitman’s Park. Led by Greg Trupiano, Director of The Walt Whitman Project, the performance will include performers who will make Whitman’s poems come alive. This event will feature Nicole Mitchell, mezzo-soprano and Brandon Snook, tenor. While strolling through Fort Greene, you will enjoy Whitman’s prose and poetry. The event will conclude by walking up Myrtle Avenue to 99 Ryerson Avenue, the last existing building in Brooklyn that was a residence of Walt Whitman. To RSVP call 718-391-8824.
