“NOW: In History”
With imminent Brooklyn Public Library budget cuts topping over $20 million and a massive borough-wide cut back on library hours and resources, the historic Williamsburgh Library is losing critical funding. This new program series aims to bring the attention of those who love local history to a public institute deserving of its support. Coinciding with a historical calendar, each presentation will feature an author, historian, or expert speaking about a historical moment in New York City’s history. For the June presentation, Edward O’Donnell, author of “Ship Ablaze: The Tragedy of the Steamboat Gen. Slocum” will present a special slideshow on the subject. 5th Annual Brooklyn Blogfest
There will be a panel of experienced bloggers talking and taking questions, a photo blogger video, a new blog shout out and break out groups of like minded bloggers. Advance seating is already sold out but you can still grab some tickets by getting there early. There will be appearances by fellow bloggers, Spike Lee and Lemon Anderson, to sound off about how and why Brooklyn remains such a rich source of material and inspiration. Tuesday, June 8. Brooklyn Bridge Conservancy Green Team
Green Team members donate thousands of hours to provide critical care for the much-used park located at Main and Plymouth Streets each summer season. Participants work on a wide variety of projects in addition to tending the park’s green space and plantings. While the volunteers will focus on the Main Street park this year, the Green Team will soon expand into other areas of the newly opened Brooklyn Bridge Park, operated by the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation. CHCA’s 25th Anniversary

In Celebration of Crow Hill Community Association’s 25th Anniversary, there will be a community held celebration. There will be a talk titled: Listen To This: Crown Heights Oral History Project Five students from Paul Robeson High School have interviewed more than 45 people who have lived in Crown Heights for over 15 years, to learn more about the history of their changing community. Conversations in Jazz
Jazz: Brooklyn’s Beat entertains thousands of Brooklyn residents and visitors with some of the most prominent jazz artists of the day. Celebrated photographer, author, music producer (and former CIA agent) Hank O’Neal will chat with WBGO’s Gary Walker about The Ghosts Of Harlem, his book of photos and stories about jazz legends. Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Hinton, Maxine Sullivan, Panama Francis, Cab Calloway and many others come to life during a period and place Duke Ellington described as out of The Arabian Nights!
