Adult Education: “Homespun and Handmade”
Adult Education is a Brooklyn-based monthly lecture series devoted to making useless knowledge somewhat less useless. In April, Adult Education welcomes a panel of presenters to speak on the theme of “Homespun and Handmade.” The line-up will include Laura Silver, Michele Filon, Matt Haber, and Jessica Pigza. Silver presents her field notes from a search for identity, belonging, and a humble hunk of dough. Filon examines the media effects of the Red State/Blue State crafting chasm. Haber explores the amazing life and career of Sidney N. Laverents, America’s greatest armchair auteur. Pigza surveys early twentieth century craft books advocating the creative use of castoff materials. Tuesday, April 6. Doors at 7:30 p.m. Event at 8 p.m. $5. 702 Union Street, Union Hall.
Citizenship Drive
Ready to apply for citizenship but need assistance to complete the form? The Crown Heights Community Mediation Center (a non-profit organization) is offering free assistance to eligible individuals to complete the N-400 citizenship application forms. If you are eligible to apply, you will be scheduled to meet with a trained volunteer to fill out the N-400 form and receive information about the additional requirements and documents you will need to complete your application. Apartments and Neighbors
Apartments and Neighbors is an evening of selected shorts featuring tales by Raymond Carver, Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky (from Memories of the Future, nominated for Best Translated Book of 2010) and James Lasdun about the mysterious, curious or just plain insane people we live close to, with a special guest storyteller from The Moth: the Tony and Obie Award-winning playwright and actress Sarah Jones (Bridge and Tunnel). Brooklyn Preservation Council Meeting
Among the agenda items for this meeting are the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s feasibility study for the Carroll Gardens Historic District extension, the BPC’s comprehensive list of proposed Brooklyn landmarks, and the Flatbush Historic Districts.
