Public Hearing for Coney Island Structures
There will be a public hearing by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission for the consideration of two structures in Coney Island to be designated as landmark status. The two key buildings are the Shore Theater and the other Childs Building that is now the home of the cultural arts organization, Coney Island USA. The public and all Coney Island supporters are urged to present themselves for support. Tuesday, March 23. The Child’s/Coney Island USA building is scheduled for 11:55 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. The Shore Theater is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. – 12:35 p.m. (go early). Leticia James Town Hall Meeting
Residents of the 35th Council District will have the opportunity to learn about local services and organizations at this town meeting. New York City agencies along with local service organizations, associations, educational and arts groups will distribute information, and representatives will be present to answer questions and/or schedule appointments. Student Art Show
Students of the Brooklyn Community Arts and Media High School are showing off their creative masterpieces at a show at the Bed-Stuy Y. The opening reception was last week, but the exhibition will be up until March 25, and is a mix of photography, abstract painting, and graphic design done by 9th-12th graders at the school. The show is open to all and you do not need to be a Y member to check it out. Thursday, March 25. 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Free. 1121 Bedford Avenue, Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA.
Greenway Planning Workshops
The NYC DOT will be hosting a series of workshops over the next couple months so that community members can provide input into the development of a Greenway master plan. Brooklyn Greenway Initiative and Regional Plan Association are co-sponsoring the workshops. Please participate in this process and make your ideas heard! Community Yoga Class
Triomph, Fitness, Health and Wellness is a new center offering yoga, pilates, boxing, acupuncture, and nutritional support. They believe in community involvement and giving back and are actively making moves to do so. Every Thursday, they provide a donation accepted yoga class for the area. During this month, all proceeds will go towards Day One – the only organization in NYC devoted to combating teen dating violence. All are welcome to attend. If Walls Could Talk: A Workshop on the Genealogy of Your Home
As part of the Brooklyn Heights Association’s Celebrating a Century yearlong series of events, the BHA will be presenting a two hour workshop on Saturday, March 27th at 2pm. Held at the Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS), this workshop will help you discover the intriguing history of your house using BHS’ images, records and documents.
Attendees will be introduced to the library collections as well as essential tools for house and building research, allowing them to piece together the architectural and social history of any Brooklyn home or block. At this event participants will be given time to use their new skills to begin research in BHS’ Othmer Library. Admission: $10
