Celebrating a Century: Hollywood in the Heights
Pete-Hedges.jpgThe Brooklyn Heights Association (BHA) turns 100 this year and, to celebrate a successful century of service to the Brooklyn Heights community, it will be hosting a series of events all year long. This event will begin with Peter Hedges, a Brooklyn resident and filmmaker of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, presenting the premiere screening of a film montage featuring notable clips from films shot in Brooklyn Heights throughout the years. Fewer than 5 percent of healthy Americans eligible to donate blood actually donate each year. In New York, only 2% actually donate. You can change that easily. LGBT Panel Discussion
The Brooklyn Community Pride Center (BCPC) in collaboration with the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Charles Hynes’ Office, and the National AIDS Education & Services for Minorities- proudly presents the third installment in BCPC’s community education panel discussions. Did you know that LGBT youth are disproportionately exposed to violence in the home, which can lead to eventual homelessness? All are welcome to come and discuss this topic. “The No Place”
Curated by Elizabeth Ferrer, “The No Place” features the work of six contemporary artists who conjure utopian and dystopian environments in distinct ways to explore such issues as geo-political conflict, human rights, urban development, the environment, and most broadly, how the artists comprehend and utilize physical space. Tin House Reading
For this special Brooklyn Reading Works event, Rob Spillman is bringing together a stellar group of Tin House authors, including Brenda Shaughnessy, Matthea Harvey and Elissa Schappell. They will be reading their own work plus one poem each by Heather Hartley, the Paris editor of Tin House. Lefferts Farm Food Coop Meeting
Plenty of people have weighed in the debate as to whether the planned PLG food coop should be workers-only or not, but regardless of where you stand on this issue, start coming to the coop’s planning meetings if you care about having a food coop in the neighborhood.
