Creation in Reverse
David Byrne will discuss the question, why do certain bands create a certain sound? He argues that certain bands are affected by the venues where they perform. The former Talking Heads front man expounds on this theory, with the aid of slides and sound clips, in a free lecture entitled Creation in Reverse at 8pm at the Bell House. The event is first come, first served, so be sure to get there early. Monday, January 11. 8 p.m. Free. 149 7th Street, The Bell House.
Open City Dialogue: Card Counting
Learn how to make the most of your trips to Atlantic City with tonight’s Open City Dialogue lecture at Pete’s Candy Store. Josh Axelrad is a former professional blackjack player and current memoirist whose “Repeat Until Rich: A Professional Card Counter’s Chronicle of the Blackjack Wars” will be released in March; he will be discussing the card counting strategies that he used (and that got him banned from a number of Vegas institutions), and whether the ethical questions it raises make it an unsafe bet. Monday, January 11. 7:30 p.m. Free. 709 Lorimer Street, Pete’s Candy Store.
ArtsCetera Trial Classes
ArtsCetera will be holding free trial classes for families wanting to sample something new and for alumni who want to check out their new Park Slope location at Bend and Bloom Yoga at 708 Sackett Street, between 4th and 5th Avenues. Music for Life: A Fundraiser Concert
This fundraiser promises a fun rock/R&B night out with the added bonus of helping fight cancer. 30% of ticket sales at the event will go towards the American Cancer Society; the fabulously funky Brooklyn-born Christopher Complex and Optimus Funk headline, with Harlem R&B singer HAZali, Sweet Velvet, and Nova Road providing support. Tuesday, January 12. 8 p.m. $20. 70 N 6th Street, Public Assembly.
“Tracking Transience”
After an erroneous tip-call into law enforcement authorities in 2002, artist Hasan Elahi was subjected to an intensive post 9-11 investigation by the FBI. After undergoing six months of interrogations and ultimately nine consecutive lie-detector tests, he was cleared of suspicions. After this harrowing experience, Elahi conceived “Tracking Transience,” a self-tracking system that constantly and publicly presents his exact location, activities and other personal data. Wednesday, January 13. 7 p.m. Free. 300 Nevins Street, Cabinet Magazine Space.
dirty – i can’t go to the card counting thing, and don’t really play black jack, but how cool. what a random event. i still love pete’s too.
David Byrne maintains a punishing touring schedule, playing upwards of 250 gigs a year here and abroad. He is often booked to close large-scale, open air events and festivals in countries like Scotland, Australia, Spain, and Brazil, often performing before 80,000+ people in football stadiums
Too bad Byrne is a jerk and won’t reunite the Talking Heads (my #1 favorite band) 🙁
Creation in Reverse and the card counting thing sound really cool
