HDC’s Annual Grassroots Preservation Awards, Featuring Mary Kay Gallagher
For the past forty one years, Mary Kay Gallagher has been working in the preservation the old-fashioned way, one house at a time. As The New York Times wrote last year, Mary Kay Gallagher got into real estate as a kind of civic duty, to help find responsible guardians for the shingled, gabled and columned behemoths in her own backyard. She sold her first house in 1970 in what would become, in 1979, the Prospect Park South Historic District a designation which she campaigned for. Her dedication to her community and neighborhood is evident on her website which details the 11 separate historic areas of Flatbush and gives details both of their history and their neighborhood associations. Thursday, May 12th, 6 p.m., Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims, 75 Hicks Street (at Orange Street), Brooklyn Heights; $25/person $15/Friends of HDC, payable at the door; E-mail hdc@hdc.org or call 212.614.9107 for more information.
