Myrtle Avenue Pedestrian Plaza Design
The City’s selected engineering and landscape design firm, AECOM, will be presenting a few conceptual designs for the Myrtle Avenue Pedestrian Plaza. This is the second and final community meeting for the plaza before presenting to the Community Board. Last October, AECOM held an initial workshop to gather ideas from the community on what type of programming, landscaping, and amenities we would like to see take shape at the future plaza. Please join in to review their designs and give your input! This will also be a chance for you to meet and speak with Matthew Geller, the artist selected to develop public art as part of the plaza. Tuesday, February 1. 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Free. 77 Clinton Avenue, Benjamin Banneker Academy.
Adult Education: Brooklyn
According to Brian Williams, the biggest media story of 2010 was the New York Times’ discovery of Brooklyn. But what do we really know about this so-called “borough?” On February 1, Adult Education — a Brooklyn-based monthly lecture series devoted to making useless knowledge somewhat less useless — welcomes a panel of presenters to speak on the theme of “Brooklyn.” Join speakers Betsy Bradley, Heather Quinlan, Howard Eisman, Mike Miscione for some useless yet entertaining knowledge about Brooklyn. Tuesday, February 1. Doors at 7:30 p.m. Event at 8 p.m. $5. 702 Union Street, Union Hall.

Brooklyn-wide Civic Alliance
A NY Times column pointed out that Brooklyn lacks “broad-based media and civic organizations” and neighborhood organizations “haven’t meshed into a borough-wide network.” While the concept of a Brooklyn alliance is not new (and Queens has one), the time seems right for it to become a reality. The Four Borough Neighborhood Preservation Alliance is helping to organize this meeting, with a likely initial focus on land-use issues. Monday, January 31. 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Bedford Room, 2nd Fl., Campus Road & East 27 Street, Brooklyn College Student Center.
