I for one am shocked. Shocked, I tell you.
I shouldn’t be talking to you, dittoburg- you make me buy more books :-).
But yes- I’ve been wondering for a long time. Same thing with office space- I always knew we were overbuilding, but the company I used to work for lost its office space because the building was sold and converted into co ndos. I ask you, if we so desperately needed new office space in downtown Manhattan, why were office buildings being sold off and converted to condos?
bxgrl – I remeber doing a rough calculation with my wife, based on NYC incomes, as to how many people there were to buy $750K condos in the boros (mainly Brooklyn) and a rough estimate of how many were going to be available. The numbers just didn’t make sense, even before the crash.
Thought the article on the condo glut was fascinating. For the last few years I’ve been wondering how many new luxury units could be built before it was “too many.” Even without the economic downturn I think there was a glut.
Those developers should create affordable housing out of empty units instead of letting them sit there. According to an Acorn study, it seems that developers took advantage of the tax breaks and the 421-A abatement without ever building affordable housing.

NEW YORK – Police say a teenager is hospitalized in serious condition after being thrown off the roof of an eight-story Brooklyn apartment building.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly tells reporters the 17-year-old’s hands were duct-taped together when he was found Tuesday morning in the East New York neighborhood.
Police aren’t offering a potential motive and say they don’t know how many people were involved in the incident. No arrests have been made.
