thanks for choosing my photo! it was really exciting to see it on the brownstoner front page – Matt.
No, he wasn’t there 1st. He used to be set up outside Connecticut Muffin until a few weeks ago when he moved 1 storefront away from the bookstore. Catherine had no problem with him until then and never “prevented” him from selling books.
Yes, it probably could have been handled better but no one was asked to do what they did. Catherine’s email only asked for suggestions on what to do about the situation.
Re: the con ed story- They done something similar a few block from me on 18th and 6- they’ve cut up the street and sidewalks, leave sand everywhere, and where they’ve finished with the sidewalk, they’ve just patched with asphalt, not concrete. Can they really just take a block over like this? (and leave an ugly black racing stripe on the sidewalk?)
Was he really there first? That’s kind of sad for him then. Sounds like this turned into a lynch mob against this guy.
Re Community Bookstore, don’t they understand the Constitution and interpretations thereof? You cannot prevent booksellers from setting up sidewalk stalls due to what the courts have found to be their First Amendment rights.
Second, this guy has been there forever, (if it’s the one I’m thinking of), maybe even before the bookstore.
Third, he sells used books. CBS sells new books. There’s really no conflict there.
