GIve it time, it will fade again.
when they stripped off the white paint the faded “sailmaker” sign appeared. I definitely remember a faded version of it but perhaps after the furniture store closed. The building was such an eyesore when that store was in business.
There was a faded version of this very sign when the furniture store was there. I remember admiring it and hoping that it would be repainted in kind. The Landmarks Preservation Commission, who approved the restoration of the ground floor facade, would never have allowed a made up sign to be painted on the bricks.
The Empire Stores in DUMBO have faded advertising too, including one for “Yuban Coffee” in fancy script lettering. I hope that is repainted when the time finally comes to restore that old complex.
It’s a restoration of the original signage, not a disneyesque addition.
Maybe in the past- otherwise why put it up? isn’t this landmarked?
