Methodist Hospital Responds to Concerns About Its Emergency Room [GL]
I had to go to Methodist Emergency at 3am once, for acute urine retention during my pregnancy. We sat there in the waiting room with absolutely nobody at reception/triage to even ask why we were there, for 20 minutes. The one woman who did appear did the insurance paperwork not triage and was rude, uncaring and callous. Literally ignored me, even when I was standing over her begging for help in pain. While pregnant. What kind of so-called healthcare worker does that?
Finally a nurse came out and when she learned why I was there she got concerned about me and rushed me back to see a doctor. But what the f*** at leaving people sitting there so long without triage? Somebody could have been dying for all they knew. I had the same observation, that Methodist is used as a primary care facility by the uninsured. The place was full of people with sniffles, aches and pains who normally would have seen a primary care doctor, not gone to the emergency room. Is there not such thing as free clinics in Brooklyn for the uninsured? Because other cities have them.
Went to Methodist about a year ago with my wife who was writhing in extreme abdominal pain. We waited about 4 hours before anyone would see us – the whole time she was moaning and nearly unable to speak. Meanwhile, patients filed in who were quite obviously uninsured for various ailments including coughing, runny nose etc. Several children were admitted immediately for having the sniffles.
Diego is absolutely correct that this is a primary care facility for the uninsured, as many ER’s are. But what is truly sad is they finally saw my wife, told her she may have an ulcer and sent her home. 2 days later, whilst visiting my parents in LI, she had severe pain again, went to a LI hospital where she was seen immediately and admitted with Gallstones blocking her bile duct and causing a life threatening condition in her liver.
Thanks for nothing Methodist!
Methodist ER is a MASH unit plain and simple…it is used as a free clinic for all of the immediate hoods b/c it is assumed the care will be better in “Park Slope.” Bad assumption, I’m afraid.
Re Methodist, wifey put her finger thru my eye a few weeks ago. Sun 6AM.
Overall, I’d rate it a positive experience. It took a couple of hours, but a young intern saw me, looked at my eye, and diagnosed abraded cornea. She wasn’t sure if it was worse and got a more senior doc to look at it, who confirmed diagnosis. She also apologized several times for the wait.
OTOH the ophthalmology machine that could have made a better inspection of my eye was broken and awaiting a part.
