Benson: Meatballs! Ha. Sounds like an older version of some of the Dominican places I have been.
Frank the cobbler is a treasure; go to his store, i am sure you will notice a lot of details I missed if your Grandfather ran a store. Its on 5th around 46th
I love barbershops, especially the older ones. Most of the ones I run across for my pictures are Dominican or Puerto Rican, but there are still a few old Italian ones left. Here are a few more:

I’ve written about this before on this site: there used to be a barber shop in Sunset Park at around 5th Ave and 30th Street known as “Meatballs”. The place actually didn’t have a formal name. It was inside a squat one-story warehouse-type building. It was known as “Meatballs” because most kids got a buzz cut, and hence their head looked like one after they were finished.
The place was factory-like. There were about 10 barbers, all Italian, and they cut hair quickly. A haircut cost 25 cents. After a quick cut, a kid would get a lollipop. It was a place where working stiffs like my dad went for a haircut, and took their kids. Always in the background there was talk of horse racing and other similiar topics, and the place had a heavy odor of Brylcream (sp?).
My grandfather was a cobbler in Sunset Park and had a shop very much like the one pictured.
Thanks for the photos. They bring back pleasant memories.
Hmm:
Yes, they still go here for shaves (I think the sign says both a shave and a haircut are 10 bucks).
Also, another relic of time, is an old booster seat that must be close to 30 years old, so I am sure they used to cut kids hair. Did you ever get a cut here?
Way back in the day, my father used to go here not only for haircuts but for a shave too. As a kid I used to go with him and watch. I can’t imagine letting someone with a straight razor coming near my throat! Do men go for shaves anymore?
Thank you for the photo!
On the same block is the other old Italian business man, frank the cobbler. He has had his store for 45 years

Some of the few remaining businesses from when the area was Norwegian and Italian.
Brilliant. Espresso and a lemon tree in the window. I love it even more.
Thanks. Its from an Italian barber in sunset park (5th and 46th) thats been around for close to fifty years; Here are more pictures of Tony (the barber)
