Ha ha Ditto — a perfect summation of our food policy.
I think the law is you can only use food stamps to by food with corn products in it.
I don’t think you should be able to buy potato chips, cookies, ice cream, sugared soda and other unhealthy foods with food stamps. Unfortunately, “Big Food” would never allow this.
It’s a shame when soda and chips is cheaper than meat, beans, and veg. Kind of reminds me of the Marie Antoinette saying “let them eat cake.”
I am so sick of these misleading articles and studies.
Studying bodegas is irrelevant because bodegas are not grocery stores.
I live in Eastern Bed Stuy, and we have an excellent produce market, a better than average grocery store, and a better than average neighborhood fish store.
There are two restaurants serving healthy options with copious green vegetables, fish, and grilled meats.
The problem is education, cost, and time. People do not realize that large amounts of refined carbs in the form of soda and sweet drinks, sandwiches, chips, cookies, and candy — particularly the drinks — cause weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease in children and adults. People are short on time, and they need something that is quick and easy and very inexpensive and their children like.
I would love to see a public education campaign emphasizing the importance of home-cooked meals in your ethnic tradition, whatever it might be. Also, the Park Slope Food Coop is a very impressive solution with many low-income members.
maybe it already happened, but i’m waiting for *rob* to start talking shit on the world cup, people enjoying the spectacle, how its annoying or lame or something. it only makes sense he would….
It’s a loaded term, they were going for shock value. However, since they’re not wrong, complaining about the term seems beside the point?
I think the term “eco-apartheid” is extremely inappropriate.
Um… so you think something’s wrong with the article, is that it?
