  1. At least in the UFT (my former union), last hired / first fired. So your youngest and least committed members are let go in a layoff, leaving the long-standing diehards as dues-paying members.

The fired workers will no longer be union members, so union leadership doesn’t have to worry about them. It’s more importatnt to keep your ongoing membership happy, since they’re the ones who will vote in the next union election.

  6. Ronald S. Languedoc, a tenant lawyer and the board member who forwarded the motion proposing a rent freeze, said the recession had been “devastating” for rent-stabilized tenants. He also noted that operation costs for landlords of rent stabilized apartments had increased 3.4 percent from May 2009 to March 2010, according to data compiled by the board. “That price increase is the lowest in my time on the board,” Mr. Languedoc said.

  7. Farmacy looks great. I just hope it opens and stays open this time. Vermont Pharmacy very briefly re-opened about a year ago and closed just as quickly. This place looks much different, more upscale than what had been there before, so I’m guessing there are new owners.
