  1. I agree with Anon 2:40. Have ya’ been on Adams Street? When traffic is heavy with bridge congestion, there can be traffic backed up to from Tillary to Fulton Street. People are supposed to hang out down there?

A plaza only works if it has something to draw people there. That’s why Fulton Mall is a failure. The businesses all close by 7pm and once they are closed the mall is a ghost town. Now they are supposed to want to hang out on a corner that has the old family court building, a hotel and the back side of a NYC Tech? Who’s taking the family there?

A better idea would be to close the two small streets around the old post office to traffic completely and create a greenway that streches from the Municipal building to Tillary. Sure the courthouse is in the middle, but folks could still park on Court and with the wide sidewalks and setbacks on Court it makes far more sense. I swear some days it feels like the urban planners in NY don’t even live in this city.

  2. B’KLYN TO GET PLAZA PIZZAZZ
“Both proposals are aimed at making the area “somewhere you’re glad to be and hang out,” said Robert Perris, the board’s district manager.”

Why would you want to hang out in a plaza near all the noise and fumes of the Brooklyn Bridge traffic when you can walk down to the Promenade and have a lovely view of the skyline. The Promenade is right above the BQE, but you barely hear traffic and don’t smell auto fumes.

  3. Re: Plaza for downtown Brooklyn?

“The Department of Transportation wants to test the idea by temporarily closing off traffic along portions of Willoughby Street and the east service road of Adams Street.”

Wasn’t the concept of closing off streets to make pedestrian promenades in downtown Brooklyn already tried. To my knowledge, it was called “Fulton Mall” and was an aesthetic and urbanistic failure. Why should Willoughby Street just one block north be any different?

  4. Can anyone tell me where exactly this pedestrian plaza would be? I’m completely confused by the article. It’s gonna be on Adams Street *and* Willhouby? From Fulton mall to the civic center? Where is the “civic center”? And if it’s very obvious to everyone, I apologize for being a dummy.
