This Week in Brooklyn Papers
1) Another story about Magic Johnson’s investment company purchasing the Williamsburgh Bank building. A couple of interesting nuggets that jumped out at us: 1) From the time it was built in 1929 until 1962, the Williamsburgh Bank building’s four-sided clock was the largest in the nation; 2) Corcoran has already been signed up to market…

Magic’s Kingdom [Brooklyn Papers]
2) While the addition of another 3,000 commuters on its own raises concern about congestion, the UN folks pose a particular threat to parking and traffic due to their lack of respect for traffic laws and their failure to pay tickets. That pesky diplomatic immunity!
UN Would Clog Streets [Brooklyn Papers]
3) Brooklyn Heights residents took another shot a the planners of the Brooklyn Bridge Park last week. Members of the Willowtown Association are none too pleased about the 730 condo units that are now slated to be built along the waterfront in an effort to make the project self-financing. Initially, we were talking about restaurants, said Ellen Bate, a Hicks Street resident. They’ve been given the kibosh completely for a private land grab.
Heights Group: Lose the Condos [Brooklyn Papers]
Two weeks ago The Kingdom moved into Brooklyn Port Authority Pier 2 on the Brooklyn Heights waterfront…and are now using what could possibly be the most desirable undeveloped stretch land in all of Brooklyn…for a f*cking parking lot! Living here costs me a small fortune and it took months to find a place with a City view, which is now somewhat less enjoyable now that it’s marred by obnoxious flood lights illuminating rows of mediocre American cars. I’m so pissed.
The problem with the UN is diplomats don’t like to take the subway. But they would be there “temporarily”, and the building would be vwhere the ugly parking lot next to ToysRus is, which seems like a great place for a skyscraper.
PS, you need to look at print edition, not sidebar only (linked here)
David, you should read the article and not get all your news from blogs. Basically it says, for all our dreamin’, the UN will never come to Brooklyn. But cheer up! At least we won’t have those UN parkers who get to illegally park anywhere and throw away the tickets!
So next time, read first and scream later.
The Willowtown story is same issues as was mentioned before re: house for sale. People in that thread were complaining about the residents being all NIMBYish about it, but they have a point. These huge buildings were added pretty late in the game. It’s like adding a whole mini-neighborhood btw BH and the water. I can see why there is some concern.
What’s this whole UN-in-Brooklyn thing about ?
