crime-map-0409.jpgThere were 63 reported crimes in the 88th Precinct between March 2 and March 29 and NYT blog The Local has categorized and mapped all of them. Despite the fact that their “weapon-wielding green man” looks more like a golf player than a violent criminal, we’re giving the concept and the execution high marks. We were also interested to see that there were no incidents (reported, that is) on the corner of Grand and Putnam. There were a couple just a block away on Cambridge Place though.

  1. The last thing I want is a fight with The What, but I feel compelled to stick up for Brownstoner on this one, because I think this quick rundown of crime stats is actually pretty useful. There’s always so much unfounded gossip about where there’s lots of crime, where there’s not, where it’s up, where it’s down–

If we actually look at the numbers, maybe it reduces the hysteria a little, and I suspect that others are like me: too lazy/busy to look it up for myself. Maybe?

  2. Dokas,

Don’t worry so much! You’ll probably be fine most probably.

Before we moved to Fort Greene…this is going back a good number of years!…we lived on Park Avenue. A friend of ours was violently mugged on one of the streets in the E70s between Lexington and Park in the early evening. A car window was smashed for the stereo right in front of our building during the night (a building of course with a doorman and next door to another doorman building).

Of course, crime was worse then. I can’t say it is that bad in Fort Greene. Things happen but I am not sure your friends’ reluctance to come to Brooklyn due to crime is well founded.

  3. As a new (2 weeks ago) resident in this area who would like to feel comfortable walking down the street using my Ipod/Iphone I cant say this doesn’t concern me, however I dont want to come to a premature conclusion since i dont have comparable data for other neighborhoods in NYC. Im curious how Manhattan ‘hoods –UES & UWS for instancethat are generally considered safe –stack up. In looking at SpotCrime.com, it shows very little crime for Brooklyn and a ton for Manhattan but the data seems spotty and therefore useless. Some of my Manhattan friends have cited crime as a drawback to living in Brooklyn but i wonder if there’s any truth to that. Even if we have stats for UWS/UES it would be hard to correlate chance of an incident unless you factored in population since those areas are so much denser than FG/CH. Anyone know have such info?

  4. Atlantic Center seems to dominate the crime stats in the 88th.

Why does Atlantic Center even fall under the 88th precinct, when the 78th is a mere 3 blocks away? They’re going to have to redraw the boundaries and some point. As it stands the entire AY footprint falls under the 88th.

  5. Brownstoner Brownstoner Brownstoner Brownstoner! WTF is this??? You know something Jon? You are going to run this Blog into the hole. Happy Shark Jumping!
