Free Trees Prove Popular [Brownstoner]
Greening of Flushing [Brownstoner]
We tried the more mulch thing, but when it rains it washes away. I was thinking to have the iron railings around the opening on 3 sides, (not the car side though), so the dogs will not poop in there, then we can border it with that heavy black plastic border so stuff can blow into it.
We did plant some allyssiuns there this weekend as a ground cover, so hopefully it will do the trick. The trees are nice, it’s just that our “hood” does not have a nice class of people….. sigh….
good point ninthreesix..
*rob*
I would love some trees on my block in Gowanus – trees help freshen and cool the air and provide shade. With nothing but concrete around, things can get pretty hot and stagnant. I can appreciate the industrial look too, but I don’t think trees would ruin it at all, and they’d be nice for those of us who actually live here.
Stargazer — Your building could just fill the “tree pit” with more mulch… then the cigarette buts and so on would collect on the edge. And there are about 400 other simple (and cheap or free) solutions. None of which involve removing the tree.
oppsy, i mean 8th street 😉
Yeah, we get all these trees, they make the openings much too wide, put mulch in there, it shrinks to below sidewalk level, catches all the cig butts, different litter and weeds grow, looks like a freakin pig stuy.
Yup, just what we need. Now they do not even put the cobblestones around the trees anymore, as per 311.
Do me the favor, take the 3 trees you planted in fron of my building and throw them out. They have been nothing but a headache for our super so far… he has to constantly clean the areas.
we got 4 trees last year and they’re just starting to thickin up. Our neighbors on 7th street seem to really like them 🙂 Good news all around for the residents.
The Bell House folks better keep an eye on the drunk bastards until these trees toughen up in a couple years… otherwise, they’re not gonna make it. (At least the ones right in front of the entrance)

Oh oh. Better not tell Leachal.
