Remember the upscale restaurant we were telling you was in the works at the corner of Kingston and Lincoln Place in Crown Heights? Well, it’s open and has a name: Basil’s. It’s a kosher pizza restaurant that also serves paninis and other Italian entrees. The pricing sounds pretty aggressive for the area ($32 for a fish entree?) but let’s hope it all works out. The restaurant also has another business challenge: It’ll be closed on Friday nights and during the day on Saturday. GMAP

  1. To answer your question, linkinplace, when I passed by around 11AM today, I noticed a sign on the window indicating the date they would re-open following Pesach.

As to their days/hours, they would not get business from their primary audience, the neighborhood Lubavitcher, if they were open on Friday night or Saturday. During the depths of the winter, however, there’s a good possibility that they will be open on Saturday nights. I’ve seen other restaurants in the nabe do that.

Lastly, when I stopped in earlier this week (early afternoon) to look at the menu, all the tables were full and there were 4 people standing around waiting for a table to open up. So, I guess launching before Passover did make sense.

  2. I so respect the merchants who observe Sabbath closings even if it means losing business! We Christians with our empty churches and Sunday-morning soccer marathons, brunches and shopping–we could learn a thing or two (remember ‘Chariots of Fire,’ anybody?) about putting your money where your mouth is when it comes to keeping holy the Lord’s day. These observant communities stay vital and cohesive because they know the meaning of sacrifice.

  3. You are not supposed to do any type of work on the Sabbath, and that includes making your employees work. As an example, you can’t light a flame, or turn on lights. It’s not only about processing money.

  4. any signs up about closing for passover? why would a kosher pizza place open up right before all other kosher pizza places must close for 8 days? odd. even as a soft opening, it’s then gotta shut down completely, unless there’s some loophole allowing a place to sell kosher pizza on passover :-). dates it would be closed: 3/29 through and including 4/6 at sundown.
