After getting an early look at the Pop-Up Park this morning, we swung back a couple hours later with the family in tow to sample the grub at the RICE cafe set up amid the picnic tables and mounds of grass. We were struck by the decidedly un-Asian tilt to the food selection. In fact, not a single piece of rice on the menu! (A edamame hummus was the closest thing.) Instead, we found selections that would look more at home on the Cafe Habana or Bonita menus—fish tacos, burritos, grilled corn a la cojita—and a few kid-friendly options like hot dog and fish and chips. And, perhaps more importantly, for those lazy summer afternoons and evenings, there are three beers on tap in addition to four wines (white, rose, red and prosecco). Food and drink menus on the jump.

  1. We were there this afternoon. Fairly empty aside from a crew of Japanese and Indian TV reporters hogging the best corner for photographing the waterfall. Other than that, very relaxed, new mounds of grass (very squishy), the concrete is painted white (very bright and will get dirty fast), picnic tables are nice, and a huge sand pit (biggest I’ve ever seen and my kid loved it as she was the only one).

Only the Indian TV crew ordered from the cafe (and they only ordered fries), so couldn’t tell quality and I wasn’t going to take a chance. Looks like it’ll do well though. If they blasted some music, it’d be like Water Taxi Beach.

  2. Here’s more info on PIER 1:

PIER 1 will feature a cafe (open at noon), picnic tables, landscaping with some trees and grass, and a sand play area.

A free shuttle with stops at Borough Hall and the High Street (Cadman Plaza West) subway stations will run to the site on Fridays (5:00pm-10:30pm) and Saturdays and Sundays (10:00pm-10:30pm).

  3. Hey, ‘toner, thanks for the kid-friendly food report. But inquiring families want to know: are there other kid-friendly things to do at the pop-up park? It’s hard to tell from the renderings. Is it worth the schlep? Keep in mind that most families in Brooklyn don’t drive, so we’ll be taking the F train with that looooong walk up from the platform.

  4. @2:55: People are eating there because most people would eat garbage on a stick if that’s what you offered. And look at most tourists. They travel to a place like NYC and look for Applebee’s or Olive Garden.
