Like the performance space Galapagos before it, Mikey’s Hook Up, which has been serving the computer needs of Williamsburgers since before the first condo went up, will be taking advantage of Two Trees’ hospitality in Dumbo. The move, which was first reported on DumboNYC last month, was confirmed by Jed Walentas at Tuesday’s Brooklyn Real Estate Roundtable. According to DumboNYC, the retailer, which also offers audio, video and music supplies and support, signed a 10-year lease for a 2,165-square-foot space on the Front Street side of the building. Good news for those of us with an office in the neighborhood!

Yeah MIkey’s what can I say when I need guitar strings, they got em, when I need a turntable needle, they got em, when I need to be talked out of some useless dj software they got me.
So i get that some people get a little attitude, but the truth is everyone I ever met that works there, knows a lot about stuff, and guaranteed if you got a lil tude its because you asked a really stupid question, or were the 700th person in that day, and asked a really stupid question..

But If i need stuff to make my music/compy stuff go.. like random adapters I would have to order somewhere else, well they always hook me up.
I guess that why they call it mikey’s hook up.

In fairness, I haven’t been to MHU in a couple of years (not since I lived in Bushwick in 2004), but I do remember their cables being overpriced. I was not yet a Mac person, so I couldn’t speak to their pricing in that realm, but it seems as though they’ve become an authorized Mac repair / retailer, so they’re obligated to keep their prices in line with whatever Apple dictates. The attitude thing is probably relegated to a few individuals, so it’s probably not fair of me to apply that perception to everyone who works there. For the convenience, it probably is worth to spend $10 more for a hard drive when you’d have to wait for one to be delivered otherwise.
I’ve been buying from Mikey’s Hookup for years. All the Apple products are the same price as everyone else. My wife just had her macbook pro’s motherboard replaced under warranty there as well. Not to mention it’s so nice not having to be forced to by over priced monster cable like radio shack and circuit city has. I buy all my cables from MHU for half the price then any other retailer around NYC. I’m sure I might have paid a little bit more on an external hard then I could have online. But I got it the same day and didn’t pay for shipping. I just moved to Dumbo from Williamsburg. I couldn’t be happier that there is gonna be a Hook up by me.
I don’t have an issue with a premium for convenience, but I had a really bad pc repair experience. Like, they just didn’t. And then I had to call several times to find my pc. And then… well, anyways, I’m not arguing against their convenience for cables and stuff. Just, not a place I’d send another pc to be looked at.
they need to advise the people who come in there to accessorize thier ipods and then go ambling about down york street with their fancy items all out in plain view that they should take a kung fu class.
price is a little higher than say bestbuy yes, but who would expect a tiny shop like this to compete with bestbuy?
when i’ve been in the store, the staff has been very helpful, i think it is a mac orientated store, and i see people getting lots of free advice there that you wouldn’t be able to get at a staples or bestbuy because the people who work at staples and bestbuy know 0 about all the gadgets in the store while the people at MHU, some of them are really into the gear.

Echoing what BrooklynBear says, Mikey’s Hook Up is painfully overpriced even compared to other NYC places. Even calling them or e-mailing to ask for basic info results in nothing from them but attitude. I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone.
I’ve always been happy with them. Its great to have a place to go to get the odd cable, power supply, what have you. (I’ll still go to TekServe for service and mail order for major purchases.) I’ve heard others complain about attytood, but I’ve never experienced it.
