Streetlevel: Fresh Produce Comes to Atlantic

When the tip came in last week that a fresh fruit joint was opening on Atlantic Avenue near Grand, we were a little surprised, but not that surprised. You see, it only confirmed a little theory that’s been brewing in our head for a while: That Atlantic Avenue in Clinton Hill may gentrify before Fulton Street. First there was Frank White. Now, there’s Atlantic Tropics, the new fruit shop; when we stopped by last week, there was still no fruit, but when Clinton Hill Blog went by this weekend (and snapped this photo), they were up and running. There’s at least one other business (that we know of) coming down the pipe that will add to the culinary corridor. Think there’ll ever be enough foot traffic to support a renaissance here?

Atlantic before Fulton… veeeeery interesting. With some traffic calming and fixing up the median, could happen.
Fulton won’t get better until business feel safe and protected from the guys who hang aournd the methadone clinics and buy crack on grand all day – it’s bleak and just nasty. if i had a biz, i would not open it on that stretch at this point.
Atlantic Ave does seem to be an odd choice. I wish them the best of luck. I’ll try to remember to walk over there but Fulton (Myrtle, and Dekalb)is soooo much closer and has less car fumes.
The double wide space I’m referring to is in the new “Fulton on Clinton” condo building across from the Met.
But there won’t be too much incentive for businesses to invest in this corridor until after the construction is done. Whenever that will be.
What is mind boggling is the time that fulton is taking to evolve. Atlantic aint pretty after dark but I’ll gladly venture there to get produce, that double wide space(laundromat and former law offices adjacent to abandoned bldg?) has been defunct for over two years, doesn’t seem that fulton is in any rush for new sustainable commerce, pity.
I think you’ve got to be nuts to open a business on this stretch of Atlantic.
There’s just zero reason to expect foot traffic there. Meanwhile both Frank White and this produce place would do very well on Fulton. It’s slightly mind-boggling why they would choose Atlantic.
Fulton’s bound to develop ahead of Atlantic ultimately. The double-wide space across from the Met and the former Washington Mutual building should have interesting new tenants soon.
Foot traffic can only increase on Atlantic; as for produce around the northern PH/western CH border, there’s nothing. Actually this is one of my biggest gripes—in general, the selection and quality of produce is sub par throughout PH; the best bet is Saturdays @ Prospect Park Greenmarket. To be fair, the produce is halfway decent at Met on Vanderbilt and better at the markets on Flatbush, with the latter price gouging to such an extent I’d rather walk another 10-15 minutes and go to Union Market or something…ugh, I should’ve joined a CSA.
Great news, will check it out!
What other “culinary” business is going to open on Atlantic, and where?
