After sitting vacant since it was built a few years ago, the bland building at 729 Fulton Street is getting a splash of color in the form of a new establishment called Fresh Market. We’ve heard from someone who lives nearby that it will be an “organic” market but the guy fixing the door this morning just referred to it as a deli. (New blog Easy Being Greene reports that the work permit says “deli store.”) The workman also reported that it should open in about three weeks. Regardless, it’s nicely positioned between the C train and the Forte, so it should do just fine. Interestingly, the new shop is brought to you by the same folks behind One Greene Sushi, the nicer of the two delis at Greene and Cumberland, and Mirai Wellness Spa at 670 Fulton.     Its no coincidence Forte has the largest freakin ad banner on this site…
    totally out of context…
    just like that concrete dildo of a building that looks like the Mayberry version of the Flatiron icon.

    the grocer on the corner of lafayette and s. elliot is much closer to the ‘forte’ than this new place. while you mention the forte building like it’s a neighborhood fixture it reeks of product placement. why must you advertise for them?? oh yes, dollars over editorial integrity, got it.

  3. When Greene Farm first opened in the early 90s, my husband and I were certain that it would wipe out the next door bodega. Instead the bodega cleaned up its act a little and survived. All of the old timers just kept going to the bodega. The bodega’s always have fresh milk because that’s where people buy it. Constant repelinishment is a must.

  4. I don’t see the need for another upscale deli. True they look nicer than the run-down corner “bodegas,” (mostly run by people from Arab countries in this immediate area,) and they have some fancier merchandise, but the prices are so high that I find it painful to shop in places like Greene Farm. Prices are pretty high in the bodegas too, and one is paying for convenience, still, except for an occasional indulgence, I’d rather schlep over to Pathmark, or go to the corner joint. If only this new place were going to be an actual small supermarket.

  5. My family has known the owners for years and they are very caring people. They take pride in their businesses. If you have purchased something at one of their establishments that is less than it should be, take it back and let them know. These things happen and I know that it would not be acceptable to them if it became a frequent problem.

  6. I have to disagree about their deli being the better of the two. Cosmetically, perhaps. But in the last year the milke I’ve bought there has been spoiled several times. The produce is old. And recently, the flour I bought there had MAGGOTS in it. I’ve never had any trouble with the other deli–they may not have much fresh produce, but their milk is always fresh.
