In October, we found out that a flower shop was to inhabit the space at 73 Front Street (that’s the ground floor retail space of 45 Main). Today, the NY Observer reports that Nico De Swert, a famous Belgian flower arranger (yes, there is such a thing as a famous Belgian flower arranger) will do more than sell blooms here: he’ll teach others how to arrange them. Down the block, at 81 Front Street, he’s opening up a flower school. “Mr. De Swert has signed a 10-year lease for 6,600 square feet,” they write. “Though some last-minute details are still being worked out, his shop is expected to open in 2009, ending the Peas & Pickles hothouse monopoly in the neighborhood.” GMAP

By the way, many of the buildings from the 19-teens through 30’s use the V as a U. This cannot be the first time you noticed this. It has a bit to do with colonial revival actually with a dose of beaux arts thrown in. Oddly enough, while all that was going on in architecture, there were many promoting Japanese flower arranging too. You had orientalism, so-called, and colonial revival all at once!
He must have been caught in a time warp — still thinks there are ever-increasing numbers of hedge-fund wives with nothing to do but spend money….
As a Dumbo resident I am happy to see retail spaces being filled. However, what the hell….? A flower school? A ten year lease? Something right there is not adding up to me. Although I should keep my mouth shut, I can see my wife wanting to take a class there.
Apropos of nothing, and because I have no real opinion on flower arranging but feel like typing something … I just want to go on record as saying that I dislike fonts that use a “V” for a “U” just because that’s how it used to be in ancient times, or whatnot. It’s not ancient times anymore. A “V” is a “V”!
