A tipster kindly alerted us to Roots Cafe, a new coffee shop set to open soon at 639 A Fifth Avenue, between 18th and 19th Streets. “The owner is waiting on final permits to go through to open. Hopefully soon. He has had the store open a few days so people in the neighborhood can come in and check it out before it opens. Meet and greet type stuff. The decorations are pretty awesome. Very inviting atmosphere.” Good news considering the loss of some other beloved cafés. GMAP
but this one is my favorite 🙂
they have grits and scrabble. you really can’t beat that
P.S. Roots is nowhere near Lonelyville. I’m guessing those who miss Lonelyville will take comfort in the new cafe opening at Prospect and 8th – waaay closer than Roots and yest still kinda far from Lonelyville.
Not to mention Southside at 6th and 19th. It seems odd to have 3 coffeeshops in a 2 block radius. On the plus side though, it’ll have hot food.
There’s already a coffee shop on 5th between 17th and 18th and the old-school Lindo’s between Prospect and 17th. And there’s the bagel store nearby, too. It’ll be interesting to see how they do.
