When we noted the buzz of activity in the old Pratt Coffee Shop space at 274 Hall Street in Clinton Hill last week, we were still operating under the impression that the new operation was going to be called the Pratt Cafe. Some new signage that went up over the weekend set us straight: The new name is, rather clearly, Clinton Park Cafe. Sounds rather posh.

  1. They finally opened to the public on Tuesday night!!!!!! I don’t remember when Nick’s closed, but it seems like forever ago. Clinton Park, though, seems worth the wait. I stopped in on Tuesday evening when I saw that the doors were open and a crowd developing outside.
It turns out they were having a Grand Opening party where they served free food and drinks to anyone that walked in. There were plenty of family, friends and locals from the neighborhood showing their support for Steve, the proprietor. He was so pleasant as he introduced himself to every new face .
The cafe looks amazing and the food was great. It is a refreshing, much needed addition to the neighborhood. I can’t wait for Sunday morning breakfast.
If the party on Tuesday is any indication of the quality of food and service there, then I have found my regular spot to grab a bite.
Good Luck Steve. See you soon.

  2. No, Mike’s ISN’T the same family. The guys there bought the place from a guy named Mike who retired and moved back to Greece. There are one or two staff members who were retained when they purchased the restaurant.

It was way better when Mike ran it.

  3. I always liked Pratt Coffee Shop, although I never got too adventurous with the menu. I’ll say this, though- the place was a dungeon and desperately needed sprucing up. Agreed with the above poster- pendant lights have become the new mauve formica, de rigueur decor for coffee shops.

Regardless, I’m looking forward to them reopening. I hope it’s the same management, they were very, very nice.

  4. Mikes is run by the same people since it started for around 20 years. It is the same family AND staff that used to be on Henry Street in Brooklyn Heights until around 1990. I love Mikes.

  5. The food was a cut below Mikes, with the addition of just about everything smelling or tasting a little like Lestoil. Mike’s has been almost as bad lately though – that freaking urinal cake they insist on piling on in the bathroom reeks, and is about the only thing I can smell if I walk in much farther than the cash register.

Mike’s was a lot better when the guy it was named after – Mike – was actually running the place. And it smelled a lot better too. How is the new Mega Bites, down DeKalb? Anybody gone in since the signage change?

  6. Pratt Coffeeshop was ok to good, and you could always get a table there. Not as good as Mike’s Coffee Shop. Since Pratt Coffeeshop closed, I never go to Mike’s as Pratt was the backup plan if Mike’s was too busy.
