To cut wait times for customers, 119-year-old Brooklyn plumbing company Petri Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Drain Cleaning has opened a new location in Gowanus.

The two-story industrial building at 355 Butler Street near the corner of 4th Avenue used to house JES Plumbing & Heating Corp. The owner of Petri Plumbing, Michael Petri, bought the building for $2.65 million in 2023, city records show.

Family-owned and operated Petri Plumbing has occupied its 901 Bay Ridge Avenue headquarters since 1906, when the business, opened by Michael Petri’s great-great uncle and great-grandfather, was known as Brancale and D’Amico Plumbing, Tinsmithing & Hardware. Over the past century, the company has repaired and installed drains, water supply lines, plumbing fixtures, gas piping, and heating and cooling systems to homes old and new.

Chris Petri, the operations manager, said the second venue allows workers to reach customers throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan more easily, and “allows us to travel throughout Brooklyn in the opposite flow of both morning and afternoon rush hour.”

“Our new location offers our company the ability to deliver fast and efficient service to our clients at a superior level than we have ever been capable of, Petri told Brownstoner via email. “This results in greater peace of mind for our clients. We could not be more excited. We are still going to deliver our trusted services that we’ve been doing since 1906, but now even more efficiently to benefit our clients.”

The spot opens in Gowanus as the neighborhood, prone to flooding during storms, is going through a huge wave of development thanks to a rezoning. Residential towers are climbing on formerly industrial lots by the dozen.

The area has long been home to skilled tradespeople who work on old houses throughout Brooklyn, such as ironworks, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, machine and wood shops, as well as suppliers such as lumber and salvage yards.

Well known to Brownstoner readers and a frequent participant on the Forum, Petri Plumbing is also a longtime Brownstoner advertiser.
