and another thing.. a 9 year old who starts shop lifting doritos turns into a 14 year old who starts stealing video games who turns into a 21 year old who robs your house. stop perpetuating the cycle of poverty and crime.. give the kids their free metrocards and suck it up as a quality of life preservation issue. you will thank me in years to come if you do. also divert monies from stupid crap like waterfront parks that only service yuppies for a few housr a week and put that money to afterschool programs (that actually WORK!) instead. i wish i was mayor.
plus, this hasnt been discussed too much, if we cut their free MTA pass, it cuts into their allowance (and they DO get allowances no matter how poor they are) they will just swipe their doritos in the morning before school instead of actually paying for them… so in essence the MTA is screwing over small business owners.
PC to say that? hells no. truth? yes.
if i had to pay 4.50 a day to get to and from school every day as a kid there is no way in hell i would have gotten an allowance (no matter how meager it was) and potentially i would have had to start stealing for my childhood vices. thing long term people! think outside the box (i hate that phrase, but whatever)
I saw that Dave! It’s MacDonough St all over again except all up and down 2nd Ave. It’s not just going to be a few buildings. New York is full of old, unreinforced masonry buildings. If there was ever a tiny earthquake here it’d be a disaster.
i thought the mta was shifting them out in little segments of the construction at a time? but yeah, a month, sounds ridiculous because they cant even tape up a damn sign in a month (and fyi i think we have a kick ass subway system) but when it comes to construction, holy crap, thins take FOREVER. 2016? jeez. that sounds like outta space years to me right now. tho i guess 6 years does go by really fast (like the last 10 at the world trade center site have..). not. i’d sign that mta petition if they meant they wouldnt REALLY raise fairs, but of course they will. did you join the SOS (Save our Students) campaign? as much as i find nyc school kids deplorable and annoying, i think the last thing the mta should cut are their free metrocards. could you imagine the outrage if kids in the suburbs had to pay 2.25 per bus ride to get to their school? wtf? that should be part of a free education and it’s one thing i dont mind paying for with my taxes… make those dumb ass little crotchfruits GO TO SCHOOL! (but let them eat homemade cake at their bakesales please)
The MTA is going to move people out of a number of buildings on the UES for “a month” because they are concerned that the buildings won’t stand while they excavate underneath for the 2nd Ave subway.
Apparently they work through the night up there and it has been pure hell for the residents. There are lots of videos of late night dynamite detonation underground!!!!

A major public works project that will take more than a year? Benson is apoplectic somewhere.

It’ll be done in 2016.

Um, sure, right after you sign the petition to increase taxes to pay for continuing the current level of service.
blowfish, if we go out next WEDNESDAY, instead of THURSDAY, will you join us???
