ODB Defaced in Bed Stuy

For me it’s a lot about how good looking they are. ODB is probably the worst. Now T.I., that’s another story 🙂
Hey What,
Did you hear about Tribe Called Quest’s contract? They made something like $200 each for Low End Theory AFTER it went Platinum.
There were plenty of people making comments about Miles’ addiction back in the day, as you well know, what. In fact, much of mainstream American thought all jazz musicians, black and white, but especially black, were drug addicts. Didn’t help that quite a few were, including many of the best, and now, most famous and influential.
They were musical geniuses, but they weren’t great role models. That’s just a fact of life. It doesn’t mean we have to continue the grand tradition.
Why are putting entertainment and role model in the same sentence? I know it’s inevitable and young people will look up to anyone in the public eye, but it still bothers me that entertainers are automatically judged for their role-model-ness.
ODB was not making millions!!! Most musicians make their real money solely from touring.
Rob,
I am not a fan of Northern State or any of the other female mc’s you named, but I will step off the soap box. I would reccomend that you check out Jean Grae, one of the best rappers ever (no rampant vamped out sex imagery) and if you need a white-girl fix, try Invincible (gets political, but very good). You might also like Bahamadia.
northern state rocks! you stop it hahahahahah. if anything they are just as cheesy and faux as the beastie boys.
*rob*
Record companies are loan sharks. And Northern State are an abomination unto hip hop, popular music, ladydom.
“Can we raise up some better role models for our kids to emulate, instead of a foul mouthed rapper with thirteen children, who’s dead from an overdose? I don’t see the attraction.”
Miles Davis was a Heroin addict. I don’t hear people making those comments about him.
“MM, don’t forget the time he appeared on MTV allowing their cameras to film him collecting food stamps and a welfare check while he was earning millions with Wu Tang.”
You are a Lawyer right? Go read his contract with that Record Company and see where OLD was earning “millions’. The 80’s and 90’s Rappers had slave contracts and would not recive a dime until the third album.
This is not hip hop
Then what the F** is it??

The What
Someday this war is gonna end..
Like MM said, he wasn’t any realistic role model for any form of social responsibility. In a way, it’s amazing he lived as long as he did. I recall police shot at him once in East New York, but didn’t wound him, apparently. From a strict musical sense, he had a distinct MC persona, among the few unmistakably recognizable of the “other 9,000 members of Wu Tang” as Snappy would say.
I think a lot of people don’t set out to be role models these days, but unfortunately, a lot of younger people, for a multitude of reasons, wind up looking to people like him for someone to emulate.
