The Dept. of Transportation installed dozens of new muni-meters in Park Slope this weekend. An email blast last week from Community Board 6 had this to say about them: “Over 40 new muni-meters will replace more than 240 single space meters currently in use. They will be installed primarily along 5th Avenue between Sackett and 3rd Streets, and on 7th Avenue between Lincoln Place and 6th Streets. These new muni-meters will retain the parking rates currently in effect in this PARK Smart pilot area. Since May 2009, DOT and our community have been experimenting with variable parking rates as one way of addressing vehicular congestion that is endemic to the area. When the meters are in effect Monday through Saturday, the rate will continue to be $1.50/hour during the peak demand hours of 12pm to 4pm and $0.75/hour all other times. The removal of the single space parking meters will also free up valuable sidewalk space for pedestrians, create new opportunities for the installa-tion of more racks for bicycle parking, and additional curbside vehicular parking capacity through variable spacing.”

  1. they have to do a better job of getting the munimeter cards available to the public, these things have been around a long time now and I have yet to find a place that sells the pre-paid cards except on the internet.

and they have to train the metermaids not to ticket you while you are walking up the block to pick up the damn ticket, I’ve heard of more than a few over-eager metermaids waiting to ticket people while they are away from their parket cars getting the parking stub.

  2. I have such mixed feelings about Munimeters… they’re a lot easier than a meter (i.e., don’t need to maintain a huge supply of quarters) and they save the city money with maintenance costs and so on.

BUT you don’t get to have that ‘winning the lottery’ moment when you discover you park next to a FAIL meter.
