New(ish) Mattress Store on Fulton

This new mattress place opened a couple of weeks ago at 635 Fulton Street near Flatbush but we just noticed it for the first time this week. Evidently this is the third location for Dreamy’s—the other two are at 480 5th Avenue and 367 Flatbush Avenue. This location should be particularly convenient for all those buyers who just bought at Forte up the street! GMAP
i just bought a mattress from dreamys and i reside in forte greene, i must say they carry all the name brands and they are def. not refurbished. they delivered it the same day. sure beats sleepys 5 day wait.
I just talked to a Manhattan Macy’s rep about Tempur-pedic mattresses and was told to wait until March 10th to buy due to a “sales event”. Don’t know how much of discount it will be but I can wait another two weeks before I buy. Hell, I’ll wait another 2 years if it means not spending money at Sleepy’s.
Wait a minute.
Am I the only one who noticed the headline? They’re NOT apparently selling new mattresses…and maybe not strictly “used” mattresses.
According to the above headline, Sleepy’s is selling “New(ish)” mattresses…or was that a typo…I guess it doesn’t rhyme with “orange”. 😉 Could be the beginning of a funny limerick.
Meanwhile, I also was disgusted dealing with Sleepy’s a number of years ago and went with another company to get two all cotton “luxury hotel” type mattresses…this was a good number of years ago. I don’t think you can get all cotton (non-futon) mattresses easily these days.
Anyway, I don’t hate the fact there’s now a store in that spot. But it is rather funny that quite a while ago, a number of furniture stores closed along this strip of Fulton…and then not long ago the 99-cent store was closed for bigger and better, more rah-rah businesses to come in (I heard). Of course, nothing did and the 99-cent store reopened in the same building with a smaller space and now a mattress store which is similar to the past’s furniture stores. There was some G*d awful furniture in those places…
Mattress stores have been doing well of late because of the
bed bug issue.
used to be, used mattresses were a thriving secondary market.
no more.
most folks won’t even take a mattress from a relative these days.
Mattress sales are one of the biggest frauds on earth: each of the major mattress manufacturers make several different grades of mattresses. Unfortunately, they sell the same mattress to each outlet, but give them different names and model numbers. As a result, you cannot comparison shop.
On top of that, places like Sleepy’s frequently utilize the “bait and switch,” advertising a mattress for a ridiculously low price and then telling you the mattress you are seeking is out of stock and attempting, using high-pressure sales tactics, to sell you a more expensive mattress. I have always bought mattresses from Macy’s or other department stores during their semi-annual “sleep sales.” I’m not sure I’m getting a better mattress or a better price, but I’m sure I’m not supporting crooks.
I think a lot of storefront mattress places offer financing, and that may be how they make a lot of their income?
Do that many people really need mattresses? I mean…sure you have people moving from far away and the ones that wear out, but mattresses can last a really long time. Or maybe I just have a high tolerance for a worn mattress. Can these places generate the volume to stay in business? It sounds suspect to me.
Money laundering front. I never — and I mean never — see anyone in the branch in the 367 Flatbush store (btw Sterling & Park). My next mattress will be bought at IKEA: natural latex, wool batting, cotton cover. Erfjord. Who I believe is also a character in The Ring Cycle.
Speaking of mattresses, what is the best store in Brooklyn/Manhattan to buy Tempur-pedic mattresses? I won’t buy anything from Sleep’s again, but that leaves Macy’s (Brooklyn & Manhattan). Any other stores?
