river-deli-041510.jpgBrooklyn Heights, not historically known for having a plethora of fine dining options, is getting a new addition to its dining scene: The Brooklyn Heights Blog reported yesterday that the River Deli will soon be reopening with the same name over the door but a different concept on the inside. Turns out that it’ll be an Italian restaurant and wine bar. The owner told BHB that it could open within the next week or two. Here’s hoping for the best! GMAP

  1. “they are just stuck trying to find a place to eat near what they are visiting….”

that’s true anywhere but in the Heights there are plenty of choices although they may not be up to the culinary or chic standards of some posters. I am not the world’s biggest defender of Brooklyn Heights, I think that in many ways it is a rather closed and exclusionary community. But I think the neighborhood services, including restaurants, are really just fine. Especially if you include the options in DUMBO and Boerum Hill, which are pleasant strolls away.

  2. “It’s so funny because people come from all over Brooklyn to eat in the Heights. On the weekends the restaurants are packed with tourists both foreign and domestic.”

Well, the promenade, architecture, history, and now the new park are the draw – not the restaurants…they are just stuck trying to find a place to eat near what they are visiting….

That south Brooklyn nabe, Bay Ridge…

This reference made me smile. As many are aware, South (capitalized) Brooklyn once referred to everything in the triangle between the Heights, Park Slope, and Red Hook. Then in the 1960s community groups – perhaps egged on by a few realtors – co-opted names like Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill and Gowanus (Carroll Gardens may have always been called that…not quite sure).

  4. I agree with @Ringo…I might not have lived in the Hts as long as some (only 9 years) but my desire for good eats and shopping within walkable distance is great – I too would gladly open my wallet…we are tired of traveling on our evenings out and would love to stay in the nabe. And sorry @chrishavens, but Heights cafe and many others you list just doesn’t cut it. at. all.

  5. ML, I LOVE to complain about restaurants and shopping in brooklyn heights. In my defense, I’ve put some of my money were my mouth is and I’ve spent some time with the BID thinking about how to fill vacant storefronts.

Maybe we shouldn’t try. Maybe we should all continue to grab a cab and go downtown. I don’t think that’s great for our community, but it seems possible that’s what people want. Or maybe people think the Heights Cafe is good enough and my own personal demands are too fancy pants?

But who has truly horrible retail and dining options compared to Brooklyn Heights? If you’re saying we have it better than, say, PLG. Yeah, okay.

I love Brooklyn Heights and I love it enough to admit our weaknesses
