coffee shop
Over on Bed Stuy Gateway they’re reporting that a new coffee place just opened at 1197 Fulton Street just west of Bedford Avenue. Of particular interest: The owner is a member of the Brownstoners of Bedford Stuyvesant. Sounds good. We’ll be by for a slice of the sweet potato cheese cake soon.

  1. My boyfriend and I go to Bushbaby so often, they’ve come up with cute nicknames for us. This shop is truely a great addition to the neighborhood. It’s a warm, inviting place to hang out. We call it our second living room.

The Bushbaby owners/staff are funny, creative, and super sweet. We often stay longer than intended because good conversation is always brewing. Most people who walk into the shop can’t help but join into conversation. It’s a great way to get to know the neighbors. They KNOW their coffee and their desserts are amazing. Plus you HAVE to try their soups and wraps.

As far as the name, I’ve never asked, but if you know the Bushbaby owner, you would know there was no derogatory reference meant, at all.

Ask about the photo/collage artwork on the walls. They are gorgeous pieces with proud African American historical reference.

  2. I think the name is perfect and not derogatory. After all, we are all desendants of various tribes, hence bushmen, bushwomen, etc. By the way, if you’re wondering, I’m African American, Seminole Indian, and Trinidadian…. what a mix! :c)

  3. Back in the mid 90s there was a rap group from Flatbush, Brooklyn called the “Bush Babies”. Maybe these guys are from Flatbush. Maybe they were part of the group 🙂 Either way I am African American also and don’t think the name is derogatory, but that’s one man’s opinion.
