The Daily News brings word of Kyung Dong Oh and Kyung Ja, the couple that used to run Trusting Cleaners in Cobble Hill and whose home was destroyed by last week’s fire on Smith and Warren. Neighbors have banded together to try to find a new apartment for the couple, and St. Paul & St. Agnes Church on Congress Street has set up a fund for them. According to the article, “Kyung Ja Oh said she’s grateful for the support and the couple were insured. But they are still worried about finding a place the pair can afford, especially because they cannot bear to leave the neighborhood. ‘Now, my husband and me, we don’t have a job. We are old. What can we do?’ she said. ‘Our neighborhood is really, really wonderful. … Everybody’s like family.'”

I thought they owned both buildings? It is a shame the shoe repair guy was one of a handfull of “old school” Smith St businesses left. The barber shop seemed to be doing OK too and they fixed the place up nice.
i sort of wish this thread had gotten more posts than it did.. but anyway, that is great to hear about the neighbors coming to help in this kind of situation.
*rob*
i’m so glad to hear that they’re getting help. there were some flyers posted over the weekend on court street looking for the couple with an email contact address.
PSA – get insurance!!! homeowners or renters insurance. please!!!
A nice example of the best of us coming forth for others. In times when it seems that one’s only asset to a neighborhood lies in their wallet, it’s great that neighbors recognize the human treasures in their midst, and rise up to do something for them in their time of need. A great story.
I’m happy to hear that people are taking care of their neighbors in need. That is a sign of a healthy community.
