Brooklyn, fiercely proud of its independence from Manhattan, is an expanding frontier for the Do It Yourself movement — resourceful residents are baking bread, raising chickens for eggs, keeping bees for honey or simply renovating brownstones themselves…“Brooklynites are feeling that they want to have this identity away from Manhattan and the air of consumerism,” Professor Brown said. “There’s this element of self-preservation and economic sustainability.”
Ugh, that article was such a waste of space. It’s 2011 and The Times is just getting around to reporting on the DIY movement?
And what exactly does “independence from Manhattan” mean? Every time I return from Manhattan, loaded down with shopping, I wish I had brought a giant granny cart with me. There are still so many basic things it’s just a pain in the ass to find in Brooklyn. (unless maybe you have a car?)
The Times is always at its most idiotic when it writes about Brooklyn.
i love that *baking bread* is all it takes to make you a wild, bearded homesteader these days. wtf?
Use it weekly. However, I find it varies. Mostly because I let it rise anywhere from 8 to 24 hours in a variety of temperatures and use a number of different containers/temps/measurements/and cooking times. But it is always pretty good. Wait, people in Manhattan don’t bake bread?
