while the initial post was pretty cold… i have my own problems with the nyc biking community. as a pedestrian, i’m tired of them riding on the sidewalk. i understand the street is a deathride, but you know what? that’s not my problem.
that said, i’m sorry this young man died–though it basically just seems to be a case of drunk riding.

You’re breaking my heart. You think I’m going to set up a memorial or something?? The jackass got drunk (entirely relevant, since drinking impairs decision-making) and fell off the bridge. DRUNK people shouldn’t ride bikes onto the CAR lane of a major bridge. He got HIMSELF killed. Get over it.

Whether the guy was drunk or not is irrelevant. Plenty of people have died in NYC on bikes. Were they all drunk? I don’t think so. And even if they were drunk and even if they were negligent, that doesn’t matter. The point is that the kinds of negligence you can COUNT ON under real life conditions, with real riders, are likely to cost you your life in NYC.

It had nothing to do with biking advocacy. The man was drunk, drove onto the wrong section of the bridge, and due to his own negligence fell onto the roadway. His own mistakes cost the guy his life.
