  1. I’m so glad to see the NYT writing about illegal SROs and 8 to 12 people sharing five-room apartments in Bushwick and other areas. I don’t know what the answer is — well, yes, I do — lower rents.

The example in the story is about a couple who pay $650 for a large room and a private bathroom in a house but have no kitchen. Maybe this is what they need, but I know they could find a two-bedroom for $1200 in the same area and split it with one other couple. It seems like it would be a better way to live. Maybe they aren’t checking Craigslist because they don’t speak English, or maybe they don’t have the money to pay a deposit. I bet it’s the latter.

  2. Yikes! Isn’t that Litchfield’s old office on Third Avenue? (He used to be able to look down from his villa in the Park all the way to the Gowanus.) Demo co. sign is bad enough, but hope it doesn’t bode that the wonderful little relic of a building will be knocked down. Anybody know its status?

  3. i hate landlords who advertise apts on craigslist and add to the end “no programs!” isnt that illegal? not that im on a section 8 program or anything, but id imagine how frustrating it must be to find a decent apartment for your family if youre on section 8.
