From the trash I’ve seen around, it seems like it was put there to make it look like it was dirty – it was not the random water bottle and candy/food wrapper that is not uncommon. A few days ago at Carroll St F station I saw a TA station cleaner massaging the dust in front of the vending machine while there was what seemed to be deliberately scattered large trash on the platform.

During today’s subway ride, under the seats in front of me were a pair of latex gloves, a roll of toilet paper, and a crushed cigarette pack (Kool). Hmmmm.
