womanGreenpoint residents are being urged to have the Department of Environmental Conservation inspect their homes after high levels of explosive methane vapors have been detected in shallow soil near the site of the huge oil spill back in 1978. The vapors were found on Bridgewater Street, at the intersections of Apollo and Norman as well as at Nassau and Hausman. For those who have been calling for a clean-up for decades, the news was met with a mix of disgust and relief that some action was being taken. “They should have come years ago,” said disgusted homeowner Dorothy Swick, who lives on Hausman St. According to Riverkeeper, the environmental group which filed a lawsuit against Exxon over the spill, said that the vapors were potentially very dangerous for people’s health. “All you need is a single crack in your floorboard,” said a spokesperson from the group. Greenpoint residents interested in having their home tested can call (888) 459-8667.

  1. Methane….we all know what that smells like. Is this the same thing that one can smell throughout parts of Greenpoint (like from Greenpoint avenue down to Norman avenue, from Manhattan Avenue)???
