And if you’re a Jonathan Lethem fan, check out at Ziad’s Deli on Smith—it was the inspiration for Zeod’s in Motherless Brooklyn.
Another Motherless Brooklyn landmark is the weird, skinny building on Bergen where the protagonist lived. It used to be a car service, just like in the book, and is now (sigh) a real estate office. Before I read the book I used to wonder what it would be like to live in the obviously unattractive and cramped space above.
I love Hank’s. I’ll be bummed when it becomes a bank or a Sleepys, or some shit like that.
And, as far as bodegas go, Ziad’s is damn fine.
Nice piece with interesting information.
Ziad’s makes the BEST no frills deli sandwiches in the nabe of upper Smith. As for 108 Wyckoff….zzzzz.
