Who says you have to leave New York to find nature? Gateway National Recreation Center’s Floyd Bennett Field is hosting a “yellow bar excursion” on August 27, giving experienced kayakers the opportunity to paddle out to one of Jamaica Bay’s many islands. The five-mile guided adventure is free and open to the public; kayaks and life jackets will be provided for free as well.
The excursion will begin at Floyd Bennett Field’s Seaplane Ramp at mid-tide. From there, kayakers will journey to the yellow bar salt marsh and observe its plants and animals. A crew of at least five people, some of whom are lifeguards, will be leading the excursion and providing information and instructions.
The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 27. Reservations are required to attend; call (718) 338-3799 or visit the New York Harbor Parks homepage for more information.
