We almost wish a certain someone was still around to discuss this one…There’ve been rumors swirling about what’s going on behind the papered windows in the two adjoining retail spaces on Grand Avenue between Putnam Avenue and Fulton Street in Clinton Hill. The minutes of a recent Community Board 2 subcommittee meeting provides more details. The two spaces are being combined to create a single 34-seat bar currently referred to as Fulton Grand Bar with a full on-premise liquor license; there will also be a “limited menu” of food (and no dancing). As of last month, the owners were shooting to open some time in May. This could either be really good or really bad for what is already a volatile corner. GMAP

  1. I understand the concern – especially after living above a bar that chained hands and the noise became such a problem I had to move – but I think this place could be a great addition to the neighborhood, also making that intersection a trip destination. The owners run two other bars in Brooklyn, one on 4th ave and one in Prospect Heights I think. The one I go to has an amazing selection/rotation of beers at really great happy hour prices and free popcorn (and Old Bay seasoning). The customers and staff are friendly. If they go with a similar setting this bar should do well. Its supposed to open in two weeks and I’m hoping it fits the neighborhood bar niche that is missing from this stretch of Fulton.

  2. I luv – I’m with you. I wish it were something besides a bar opening on that corner but at least it’s a sign of life…i hope it works out. And i have to agree with lothar on Chance II as well. It just doesnt look inviting at all…hopefully this place will be different.

  3. I know the gents that are opening this place. They run two other spots in the surrounding neighborhoods. Expect a well run, clean bar with several micros/imports and no macros on tap.

  4. I just walked by Chance 11 again, after getting cupcakes. Is it Chance 11 or Chance II? It occurred to me that decor-wise, it is a welcome respite from the wainscotting and tin ceilings, and if they rebranded they could probably do well serving coffee with that decor. And possibly Asian bubble tea.

But they seem to be doing well as is. There are people in there now.

Is it seedy-looking? No, it’s nightclub-looking. A little ominous, with the bouncer and doorway, but it doesn’t seem to be crazy there, and the block hasn’t changed for the worse since they’ve opened.

The bank across the street however, how many times have they been robbed now?

And, okay, one reason I miss the What is he would actually know the answers to some of these questions. I’m not really clear what happened to him, I missed whatever drama there was — he started his own site? But one thing, he knew his Clinton Hill.

  5. Heather: no, Country House food is not good. You might think, how can anyone screw up a diner breakfast? If you want to find out, eat there. I couldn’t even finish my plate of eggs and toast. an di always clean my plate. never going back there. not to mention, service was slow, and place was 2/3 empty.

  6. 1842, I agree, I’m just repeating what I heard from a potential shop owner. If there are other spaces available, the one across from the clinic will probably be the last to go…

  7. The methadone clinic doesn’t bug me.

The cupcake place is great. Well, their cupcakes are great. They… could sell them in the coffee shop next door that does not yet exist! That would work for me.
