Madiba
This little bar and restaurant, seemingly woven out of straw, old wood and scrap metal, may be New York’s only South African restaurant. The extensive menu includes unfamiliar dishes like uphuthu, a ground corn porridge not unlike polenta, with marinated tomatoes and onions, and sauteed chicken livers peri-peri, a spicy dish of Portuguese origin, delicious on toast. Intriguing Dining Near BAM [NY Times]
This is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. Make sure to try the bunny chow and the rum punch. Mussels are also dangerously good.

The vibe at Madiba is so welcoming, it’s great. The mojitos are some of the best in town and the Malva pudding is worth the trip alone.
Luz’ pina coladas are dangerously good.
