On Sunday, we needed to get a new gas tank for the grill, so we headed over to Home Depot in Sunset Park. It also gave us a chance to look seriously at the garden offerings. Not particularly inspired, we stopped by the Gowanus Nursery, where we dropped $180 on plants and flowers. We found some time in the afternoon to do our first plantings (ever!). We’ll post the results tomorrow.

  1. Try GRDN on Hoyt St between Atlantic and Pacific. They have a great backyard full of annuals perennials trees and shrubs. The selection is always changing. They have lots of containors too!

  2. I’ve dropped some serious bucks at the Gowanus Nursery this year. It’s not about the hip shopping experience. It’s about the fact that they have stuff you can’t find anywhere else and the fact that they actually know what they are doing and can give you advice and the fact that their plants are healthy and not practically dead like HD and Lowes and the fact that I’d rather support a small local Bklyn merchant anyday over a corporate monolith, especially if that merchant is providing superior product, service, and selection.

Now, if you really want to see expensive, try Root Stock on 7th Ave btwn 7th & 8th St. Manhattan prices with Manhattan attitude.

  3. Truck load after truck load of potted plants sitting in metal racks withered from lack of water and basic care. The dead mixed together side by side with the soon to be dead. Home Depot is a sin.

  4. More to the point, when it comes right down to it, Home Depot just doesn’t provide the cool, hip shopping experience that we Brooklyn-ites crave. Shopping under a parking garage at Depot is just doesn’t make for a great experience.

  5. been thinking about my backyard too, problem is how to remove all the broken glass and garbage in the back. someone even put roof shingles there. wonder if it’s possible to sort thru it and pick it out, or whether i need to remove it all and fill it with clean fill/dirt (which would cost more).

  6. Gowanus was okay. We went there a few weekends ago and picked up a few random things beyond the Depot range. But don’t discount the Depot! It’s worth going a few times cuz you never know what you’ll find. Some of our coolest plants came from the depot. And the same plant would be double/triple at a place like Gowanus. Go figure.
